High winds can cause damage to your home or business. Wind damage can be direct, meaning the wind directly causes damage to a property by uplifting or blowing off material, or indirect, where other objects and debris are blown into a property and inflict damage.

Wind speeds as low as 30 mph can lead to power outages due to tree branches disrupting the flow of energy through power lines. Hurricane-force winds can cause severe damage to mobile homes, as well as major structural damage to homes with foundations.

Damaging Winds

Damaging winds, or straight-line winds, are commonly produced in thunderstorms, and are different than the winds produced by tornados. These winds do not refer to wind that is associated with rotational movement.

Reports of damage inflicted by straight-line winds are the most common sources of wind damage in the lower 48 states. These winds are defined as winds reaching over 50 to 60 mph. Damaging winds can result in severe, widespread damage. Properties located in thunderstorm-prone areas are most at risk for damaging winds.

Different kinds of damaging winds include downdrafts, gust fronts, derechos, haboobs, macrobursts, microbursts, and downbursts.

Tornado Winds

Winds from a tornado are typically stronger than straight-line winds. Tornado wind speeds can be as high as 300 mph and can cause severe indirect and direct damage.

There are two common types of tornadoes: those that come from supercell thunderstorms, and those that come from non-supercell thunderstorms. Supercell tornadoes are the most common; a supercell is typically developed with the help of a rotating updraft, and a tornado can form in this process. These tornados are typically the most dangerous and damage-inflicting. Non-supercell tornadoes do not originate from supercell thunderstorms. On average, these tornadoes cause less damage and exist for a shorter amount of time compared to supercell tornadoes.
